Why Proper PFD Servicing Matters Before the Holidays

1 December 2025 Why Proper PFD Servicing Matters Before the Holidays

Summer is here, and as our waterways get busier, the risks of being on the water increase. Before heading out, one of the simplest safety steps is making sure your personal flotation device is in the right condition to do its job. Even a quality PFD will deteriorate over time, and small issues can affect buoyancy, inflation performance and compliance.

Why PFD servicing matters

A serviced PFD gives you confidence that the equipment will work properly if someone ends up in the water. Regular checks pick up problems that are easy to miss until it’s too late, such as slow leaks, worn bladders, faulty buckles and harnesses, or faulty cylinders.

The most common faults we see

  • Many PFDs arrive for servicing with avoidable problems.
  • Cylinder corrosion that affects the inflation mechanism
  • Loose or missing cylinders that prevent proper activation
  • Perished straps or stitching from regular sun exposure
  • Bladders with minor leaks that reduce buoyancy over time
  • Inflation mechanisms that fail under pressure

These issues usually develop slowly. Without proper inspection, they’re easy to overlook during a quick pre-holiday check.

When to book a service

If your PFD hasn’t been serviced within the recommended period, the start of summer is the right time to get it checked. It’s particularly important for commercial operators who must meet strict equipment standards, but recreational users also have legal responsibilities in NSW. Failing to comply with life jacket regulations can result in on-the-spot fines that typically range from $100 to $250, with higher penalties of up to $5,500 if the matter goes to court. Keeping your PFD in proper working order is the simplest way to stay compliant and avoid the risk of equipment failure during the busiest boating period.
